McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

in

After a series of strikes, Unite union members at McDonald’s restaurants have a new collective agreement with improved wages and conditions. Their actions included 50 strikes in dozens of stores from Whangarei to Hamilton and a protest outside the company’s national conference. There was a real fighting spirit at several stores, and the vote to settle was only passed by a narrow majority.

Improvements won include a one-off bonus payment, and significant pay rises for team leaders and supervisors. Staff are to have more secure hours, which was one of the union’s key claims. When additional work hours are available they will be offered to existing staff, instead of more part-time or casualised positions being created.

While the agreement has been settled, the campaign is not over. The starting rates for frontline staff are linked to the minimum wage. So if the minimum wage, which is currently $12 an hour, goes up in March, then so too will their wages. Unite is campaigning for the minimum wage to go up by a dollar an hour every year until it reaches $15.

Re: McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

How about hitting Burger King too? Or do they offer above slave wages and conditions?

Re: McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

^^^ who cares ,McShit cuts down rain forest ,supports factory farming ,slaughters millions of cattle a year ,contributes to diabetes and heart disease ,you think ppl should be paid 15$ an hour for helping to prop this up

Re: McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

the union's function at these fastfood outlets seems to be to win tiny pay increases, relying on minimum wage boosts from government to top up the deal. thats why they always settle round the min wage increase date.

brief bursts of tightly controlled rebellions, isolated to a few stores, directed at creating empty media images, wound down after half an hour of the camera's leaving, was the pattern to this campaign.

where now for Unite? ho hum.

Re: McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

'brief bursts of tightly controlled rebellions, isolated to a few stores, directed at creating empty media images, wound down after half an hour of the camera's leaving, was the pattern to this campaign'.

These are lies or misinformations. Often we'd get calls - 'oh we just walked out' etc etc and we'd go deliver placards or whatever.

As for winding up strikes after the cameras had gone, there were actualy about 65 strikes (the above article is slighlty innacurate) and there were cameras present at *two of them*. There was very little media coverage. Draw a syllogism.

One strike was pulled in when a couple of people who had to go back to shift had drinks in thier hands, which is instant dismissal if caught. J.

Re: McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

fools who work for mc-not-food deserve what they get.

Re: McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

sellbydate - sounds like you are describing the old supersizemypay campaign ;)

Re: McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

"fools who work for mc-not-food deserve what they get."

Intriguing the number of free-marketeers out there who think everything can be solved by people choosing where they work and what they buy. For some people a job is a necessity, not an option.

If McDonald's did find it impossible to get staff, the government would come running with offers to import workers from the Pacific, or wherever, where people are desperately in need of an income (as they've done for the fruit industry). Maybe this is hard for kids from the privileged middle-class to understand.

McDonald's is expressing delight at the recession, and announcing new outlets, since the understand that hardship means more people will choose to eat the rubbish they produce, and that it will be easier to employ workers at lousy pay rates.

Re: Re: McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

lol Sam. You think the govt cares about the fast-food industry like it cares for our fruit export industry?

That's funny. We'd probably save money by getting rid of mackers due to the health effects.

Re: McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

I have to agree with sellbydate on the aspect of the lack of any kind of radical, forward thinking. It would have been great to see and hear explicitly radical class struggle emphasis put forward alongside the wage claims...but then again, it is a current NZ trade union and not the CNT.

Re: McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

just because someone doesnt want to support mc donalds you have to lable them ,priviledged white middle class ...please dont put me into your boxs,by the way i read that they were thinking of increasing prices and thinking twice about opening new stores

Re: McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

I think sam's comments are on the mark. Just because people support the workers at Mcdonalds doesn't mean they support Mcdonalds!

By the way where do you eat? Does all your food come from some mythical place where the food is produced by workers co-ops organically on land that hasn't been stolen?

Most people haven't got the luxury to choose if and where they work.

anyway keep up the good work, unless someone is organising amongst these workers

"just because someone doesnt want to support mc donalds you have to lable them ,priviledged white middle class"

Nope, if you read what I said, I commented that if somebody can't understand that the employment market is designed for the needs of employers and that for many people, where they work isn't something they have much choice about, and suggests that McDonald's can be removed by individuals using free-market methods, then the only thing I can imagine is that they were born into the privileged middle class. Perhaps you can suggest another explanation?

I would love to see the demise of McDonald's - I just don't suggest some free-market fantasy as a method for making that happen.

Re: McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

"you think ppl should be paid 15$ an hour for helping to prop this up"

Yes, punish the bosses not the minimum wage workers.

Re: McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

as part of the campaign mcdonald's workers did an action in support of fair trade coffee that guarantees minimum prices for growers and from coops and against "rainforest alliance" certified coffee that comes from big ranches.

one idea that did come up during the campaign was doing a joint action with animal activists around cruelty to animals/cruelty to workers. this would have been pretty cool if it had happened.

the mcd's campaign in nz in 08 was the biggest industrial campaign against mcd's the world has ever seen. give credit where it's due mate.

Re: McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

cruelty to workers ..what a joke ,you can hardly compare perceived injustice to workers to that of the very real suffering of factory farmed animals

Re: McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

Its easy to attack the workers and an act of cowardice since you make no mention of the bosses or a plan to focuss on them, since they are the profiteers of animal cruelty not the workers.

Re: McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

So many posts here by anonymous wankers who dump on low paid workers.

Never offering a positive solution , just anonymous bile and spite.

You cowardly little pricks are wasting time and space in the cosmos
