Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

in

A dozen activists from Socialist Aotearoa, the Workers Party and the Greens protested outside John Key’s house today, against the passing of the 90-day bill. The new law which comes into force in March 2009 gives small employers the right to sack staff in the first 3 months without legal redress.

The noisy protest ruffled the feathers of some of the residents of Key’s leafy neighbourhood. Some parents complained saying “there are children in the area, you know!” But rather than being horrified by the picket a large bunch of 8 to 14 year olds joined in, obviously enjoying the picket theatrics.

The picketers chanting “So it didn’t take you long; workers rights down the John” got some disapproving looks from the Range Rover mums, but lots of support from the younger set.

Re: Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

Of course he is unhappy.. How would you feel if a bunch of unshowered no-hopers protested outside your home?

Re: Re: Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

like im doing something seriously wrong

Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

Yeah, John Key and his henchmen are pompous unitarist despots.

Good shit!

Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

Sack Key & co. before their 90 days are up.

Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

"The Coming Insurrection" is initiated by Greece youths, and this might just spread around the world considering conservative policies in the middle of a recession.

Electricity bill up by 9%, and the govt will not provide support for biofuel, tax cut for the rich, 90 day bill, is ideally developing into a perfect bomb.

a Good Picket after an awesome meeting

The "We won't pay for Their Crisis" forum the night before was awesome- would be nice to get reports from different groups who were there. But nice to see the thing that people wanted- a fighting united front, in action the next day! Fair play to the activists in Unite, WP, SA and the Greens.

Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

Interesting that it was only children that supported your picket... I guess that is appropriate!

support from construction workers, cleaners and other servants t

does Madeline now think that people under 18 are laughable? typical from the right wing scum who support youth rates.

Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

A small business does not have the luxury of carrying a non performing staff member. Not all business owners are greedy facists.

It would be interesting to see the statistics of those 'sacked' under the bill to see if there dismissal was justified.

It is in the hard working employees best interest that a non performer is sent packing as quickly as possible.

While I agree with the right to protest, picketing someones home and family because of a belief they share sounds like harassment. Is it equally valid for me to picket the home of a somali or hindu family because I do not agree with their beliefs.

Re: Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

There are other ways of achieving the same end as the 90-day bill already. One could write a probationary period into a contract, employ part-time or casual workers, offer fixed-term contracts and so on. There was absolutely no need to pass legislation like this under urgency.

This bill only makes it easier and allows employers to be yet more sloppy when writing contracts.

Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

Picketing the home of the PM is hardly the same as doing so outside that of someone from a religious minority. Key wasn't being picketed simply for his beliefs, but the fact he has the power to put his beliefs into action and that those beliefs will cause real damage to the lives and households of thousands of others who can't afford a mansion. Bringing that message home to him seems like a practical way of making the point.

Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

You guys rock!!! Now all we need is a General Strike against this anti-worker bill.

Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

I"s it equally valid for me to picket the home of a somali or hindu family because I do not agree with their beliefs."

Racist scum!

Re: Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

...clearly.

Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

I think the obvious advantage though implicit is the fact that any business can employ any number of persons anytime knowing that the employer intended to only employ them for a minimum wage for three months only.

I definitely would like to see stats of new recruits from now on...

Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

good job. pity about the "Range rover mums" comment - still room for anti sexism work in the left.

Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

I don't know what you lot are complaining about...as you all are unlikely to want or get a job this bill won't affect you.

Re: Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

Great protest.Wish I'd been there.
This new bill will allow employers to sexually harass workers then sack them if they complain. We have just gone back 20 years.

Re: Re: Re: Sack the Boss: Protest Outside John Key's Mansion

Nah. This bill allows employers to deal with snivelling idiots who are costing them time, business and money.

About Time!!
