West Papuan Man Shot Dead at U.N. Indigenous Peoples' Day Celebration

Yesterday around 20,000 people gathered to celebrate UN Indigenous People's day in Wamena, in West Papua's highland region. Indonesian Military and members of the paramilitary police squad Brimob, fired into the crowd after a West Papuan Morning Star Flag was raised, killing a West Papuan man. According to information filtering out of West Papua, the shooting victim was Opinus Tabuni, an organiser for the Tribal Council in Wamena. [ Institute For Papuan Advocacy Report]

A report on the British West Papua campaign site says that Tabuni was shot in the chest by Brimob personnel, at a distance of four metres. [More]
