Let's build a peoples movement that actively addresses the root causes of Climate Change!

in

We stand at a crossroads. The facts are clear. Global climate change, caused by human activities, is happening, threatening the lives and livelihoods of billions of people and the existence of millions of species. Social movements, environmental groups, and scientists from all over the world are calling for urgent and radical action on climate change.

Between 7th and 18th December 2009, the governments of the world will come to Copenhagen (Denmark) for the fifteenth UN Climate Conference (COP-15). This will be the biggest summit on climate change ever to have taken place. Yet, previous meetings have produced nothing more than business as usual.

We call on all peoples around the planet to mobilise and take action against the root causes of climate change and the key agents responsible both in Copenhagen and around the world.

There are alternatives to the current course that is emphasizing false solutions such as market-based approaches and agro-fuels. If we put humanity before profit and solidarity above competition we can live amazing lives without destroying our planet. We need to leave fossil fuels in the ground. Instead we must invest in community-controlled renewable energy. We must stop over-production for over-consumption. All should have equal access to the global commons through community control and sovereignty over energy, forests, land and water. And of course we must acknowledge the historical responsibility of the global elite and rich Global North for causing this crisis. Equity between North and South is essential. Climate change is already impacting people, particularly women, indigenous and forest-dependent peoples, small farmers, marginalized communities and impoverished neighbourhoods who are also calling for action on climate- and social justice.

This call was taken up by activists and organizations from 21 countries that came together in Copenhagen over the weekend of 13-14 September, 2008 to begin discussions for a mobilization in Copenhagen during the UN's 2009 climate conference.

The 30th of November, 2009 is also the tenth anniversary of the World Trade Organization (WTO) shutdown in Seattle, which shows the power of globally coordinated social movements.

We call on all peoples around the planet to mobilize and take action against the root causes of climate change and the key agents responsible both in Copenhagen and around the world. This mobilization begins now, until the COP-15 summit, and beyond. The mobilizations in Copenhagen and around the world are still in the planning stages. We have time to collectively decide what these mobilizations will look like, and to begin to visualize what our future can be. Get involved!

We encourage everyone to start mobilizing today in your own neighbourhoods and communities. It is time to take the power back. The power is in our hands. Hope is not just a feeling, it is also about taking action.

And don't forget that biofuels are a cop out since they still produce carbon pollution. Also the crops that make it can be used to feed the poor instead and if byproducts from slaughter houses are used...

Re: Let's build a peoples movement that actively addresses the r

The root cause for climate change are people that are only out to make more money than what they already have by capitalist business practices with unitarist overtures!!!

"And don't forget that biofuels are a cop out since they still produce carbon pollution."

They can only emit as much carbon as was absorbed from the atmosphere when they were grown, thus they are carbon neutral. They may pollute the air if additives are added to them by manufacturers, but this is not necessary in theory to run combustion engines on ethanol or oil from plants.

"Also the crops that make it can be used to feed the poor instead"

So don't use crops. There are plenty of sources of biomass that are currently waste, human biosolids for example. Unlike fossil fuels, biofuels can be made locally for local use, from whatever unwanted biomass is available in the neighbourhood.

"and if byproducts from slaughter houses are used..."

Then it's better than draining them into streams or onto the land, whatever your views on whether there should be slaughterhouses at all.

Re: Re: Let's build a peoples movement that actively addresses t

The best sustainable, carbon neutral mode of transport is a push bike. No unless you want to be so petty and worry about the farts the person may emit while using one.

Re: Let's build a peoples movement that actively addresses the r

yea - not all biofuels are the same - some are good some aren't

"Agrofuels" is probably a better term for describing socially devestating fuel production in place of food production

Re: Let's build a peoples movement that actively addresses the r

Carbon credits are a cop out too!!!

Re: Let's build a peoples movement that actively addresses the r

COPs everywhere :)!
the COPenhagen COP15 conference is looking like the most deadly international conference to date - if you think a G8 meeting is bad, wait til you see whats on the table here!

I think its every activists duty to get an understanding of whats going on here and how it could very well lock the world into a new phase of Green Capitalism via the commodification of our atmosphere and remaining forests in order to bail out Capitalism at a time when we should be kicking it when its down and driving a stake through its heart...

G8, WTO and the World bank are driving themselves towards the centre of this process with the assistance of the NZ government [Tim Groser is head of the NZ delegation to Kyoto - AND NZs main WTO man]. The World bank already receives 16% of all Carbon Credit $ales that go through the Kyoto Carbon Trading system and have been pushing Carbon Capture and Storage, Nuclear Power etc as solutions to Climate Change,,,, this has to be stopped!

theres a great primer booklet about the big Copenhagen conference [COP15] here...

Already you have failed.
