Silence Is License For Tamil Genocide In Sri Lanka

Tamil Youth Organiation (New Zealand) is organising a vigil in Queen Elizabeth Square, Britomart, Auckland CBD on Friday 6th March 2009 from 3:00pm till 8:00pm, to expose the Sri Lankan Government’s use of food and medicine as weapons of war against the Tamil population.

Sri Lankan government is indiscriminately shelling and bombing the Vanni region where 300,000 internally displaced people have been trapped without the basic needs. The Sri Lankan government has restricted food and medicine to this area along with restricting NGO’s and media access this area.

The Tamil people who are trapped in Vanni are not only facing difficult conditions, they are also getting bombed with cluster bombs, which are causing a lot of death each day. In average over 50 people are being killed each day directly by the bombing and shelling. Now people have also started dying of hunger. Sri Lankan government’s designation of a “safe zone” gave the people of Vanni some hope, but later the government attacked this “safe zones” with cluster bombs, which has caused a lot of deaths too. The hospitals are also being targeted by the government forces.

Tamil people who came in to the Sri Lankan government area are held in concentration camps where they are tutored, sexually abused and killed. They have no freedom to leave these camps and they are not able to contact their own family members. It’s a shame this kind of a camp can exist in this modern world.

The main reason why the Sri Lankan government is able to get away with these gross humanitarian violations is because there is no journalist in the war zone. Only information that is coming out of this war zone is the Sri Lankan government’s false propaganda. The journalist who live in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo are not able to report on anything that they find out either, as if they do they have been kidnapped and killed by the Sri Lankan government and the paramilitary personal that the government has created.

Tamil Youth Organisation (New Zealand) is holding this vigil to request the New Zealand politicians, New Zealand media and the public to be aware of what’s happening in Vanni region of Sri Lanka. Also TYO (NZ) would like New Zealand politicians to condemn the Sri Lankan government of its actions and call for an unconditional ceasefire immediately. New Zealand media should not report the Sri Lankan government’s biased news and verify the reports independently.
